SB 1014
SUMMARY OF THE BILL

We are here today to let the public know what is going on in Tallahassee “under the cover of COVID”. Since advocates cannot have face-to-face meetings with Legislators, they are free to push agendas that suit their purposes. SB 1014 and SB 835 are of those bills. We wanted you to know how Legislators are treating the hard-working people of Public Education.

Here are some of the bills demands:

  • Requires annual membership renewal and confirmation by the District.
  • Mandates a density of over 50% on Dec. 31.
  • Gives PERC investigate authority and right to revoke certifications.
  • Disallows payroll deductions.
  • Targets Education unions
  • Many of the rights we have had since the mid-1970’s would be taken away.
  • We could lose the ability to make decisions on salaries, working conditions and benefits.
  • This will NOT only affect union members, but every Public Education employee
  • This will cost taxpayers an additional $400,000 according to a staff analysis.
  • Baxley, sponsor of the bill said he wants to “eliminate school districts as the middleman between teachers and unions, but the bill requires the district to confirm and validate every members’ request to join a union.
  • This clearly contradicts his statement.
    • School districts are not interested in spending additional manpower and funds to oversee union
  • This bill also carves out police, fire, corrections, and correction probation officers from the bill.
    • If the bill is so good, why are they not included?
      • It clearly is not good for them, nor is it good for any public education employee.
    • The Republican party has typically been supportive of the working class.
      • This legislation does directly the opposite
    • The Republican party has typically been against big government.
      • The bill adds unwanted and unneeded government oversight in an attempt to fix a problem that does not exist.
      • This goes against Republican and American values
    • This is purely punitive against Public Education employees
      • This is an attempt to weaken unions’ ability to organize.
      • This is an attempt to silence one segment of the working class.
    • Teachers has made tremendous sacrifices over this past COVID-filled year so our students can move forward academically, physically, mentally, and socially.
      • Many teachers returned to the brick & mortar classroom despite personal health concerns, so their students had the best opportunity to succeed educationally.
      • Is this really how we want to celebrate “THE YEAR OF THE TEACHER?”

We are asking the public to reach out to your Senators and Representatives to let them know this bill is unconscionable and must be voted down. Let them know how a teacher reached out to your son or daughter, or your grandchild or another student, and helped them through this most difficult year. Tell them to respect the PROFESSIONALS that are raising tomorrow’s leaders today and to vote “NO!” on SB 1014 and SB 835. Thank you.
